The Clinical and Translational Research program was developed as a component of the recently granted Clinical and Translational Science Award to Children’s National Health System and the George Washington University.

The objective of the Clinical and Translational Research program is to develop the clinical and translational research capabilities of research professionals, junior faculty, and scientists. This program responds to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) vision for new approaches to developing and preparing researchers who can meet the needs of a more “translational” approach to research. Graduates of the program will have the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to fill any number of clinical and translational research professions from funded scientists, clinical personnel, and those who mediate for better policy about health.

GW offers both a graduate certificate and a Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) in Clinical and Translational Research. All courses from the Graduate Certificates are transferable into the MSHS Program.

Graduate Certificate in Clinical & Translational Research

The Graduate Certificate in Clinical and Translational Research is designed to meet the professional development needs of those seeking to broaden his or her translational research capabilities and to substantiate them with an academic graduate certificate. The certificate is a great option for those who cannot meet the master’s degree more intensive time commitment. Learn how to add classes and earn the MS in Clinical Translational Research.

Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research Practice

The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research Practice requires the successful completion of 18 credit hours of coursework from the translational and health care research curriculum. The certificate capitalizes on the foundational courses of clinical research, health informatics, epidemiology, and biostatistics to prepare the graduate with the requisite knowledge and skills to conduct clinical research in collaboration with sponsored research programs.

MSHS in Clinical & Translational Research

The MSHS in Clinical and Translational Research provides graduates with the fundamental competencies necessary to practice their profession and/or lead broad interdisciplinary research initiatives under the evolving paradigm of translational research. Through a blend of core and elective courses, the curriculum can be tailored to further enhance each graduate’s value in his or her own translational research environment for those already involved in research related fields and also those wishing to enter into the clinical environment of translating science into the healthcare enterprise. Courses, projects, and mentorship experiences are all designed to collectively develop an effective approach to human health research that integrates basic, biomedical, clinical, community health services, and health policy research.

Graduates of the MSHS Clinical and Translational Research program will enhance global clinical translational research by:

  • Leading and collaborating with other scientists, clinicians, investigators on translational research teams
  • Developing a broad foundation of understanding of the philosophies and practices of translational research in human health
  • Providing strategic direction in matters of translational research priorities
  • Integrating discipline specific best practices into a new paradigm of health research
  • Developing translational research proposals in collaboration with professionals from other disciplines.
